India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday after days of nationwide demonstrations over alleged examination paper leaks. His resignation marked a major victory for student protesters. Their campaign had grown into one of the biggest political challenges for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in recent years.
Celebrations erupted at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi after protesters learned about the resignation. Thousands of demonstrators waved flags and chanted slogans. They also declared the campaign a success after demanding accountability over the examination scandal.
Education Minister Announces Resignation
Pradhan confirmed his resignation in a statement shared on social media. He said he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Modi as protests continued across the country.
He said the decision would help prevent anti-national elements from exploiting the unrest. At the same time, he acknowledged the concerns and aspirations of India’s youth.
The controversy began with an alleged leak of the medical college entrance examination paper. As a result, authorities cancelled the original results and organised a fresh examination for nearly two million candidates.
Student Movement Declares Victory
Protest leaders announced that demonstrations would end after Pradhan resigned.
At Jantar Mantar, movement founder Abhijeet Dipke described the resignation as a victory for peaceful protest. He said the campaign had achieved its main goal.
Later, senior government officials met protest representatives. Following the meeting, organisers agreed to suspend further demonstrations. The agreement also included assurances that protesters would not face legal action.
Celebrations Erupt in New Delhi
News of the resignation quickly sparked celebrations at the protest site.
Crowds sang the national anthem, distributed sweets and chanted patriotic slogans. Meanwhile, police maintained a heavy security presence across central New Delhi.
Authorities temporarily closed several roads around the Connaught Place area because of the large gathering. They also restored mobile internet services near the protest venue after imposing restrictions earlier in the week.
Opposition Welcomes Resignation
Opposition leaders welcomed Pradhan’s resignation. However, they also demanded further accountability.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called for action against officials involved in the police response to the protests. He also urged Prime Minister Modi to apologise for the reported use of force against demonstrators.
Earlier in the week, clashes broke out between police and students. Security forces used tear gas and batons to disperse protesters who attempted to march toward Parliament.
Exam Leak Sparks Nationwide Anger
Student groups had protested since June. However, public anger increased after the examination controversy raised broader concerns about youth unemployment, transparency and government accountability.
Protests spread from Delhi to several Indian states. These included West Bengal, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Students organised rallies, class boycotts and public gatherings. They demanded stronger safeguards and greater transparency within India’s examination system.
Political Impact
Pradhan had served as India’s Education Minister since 2021. His resignation now represents a significant political setback for the government.
Political analysts say the development could increase pressure on authorities to strengthen examination security. Furthermore, the government may face growing demands to improve transparency and accountability.
The controversy has also highlighted the importance of protecting competitive examinations from leaks and malpractice. Restoring students’ confidence will likely remain a major challenge for the government in the months ahead.
