French and Spanish authorities have evacuated more than 220,000 people as massive wildfires spread across both countries. Scorching temperatures, prolonged dry conditions and powerful winds are making the fires increasingly difficult to contain.

France Orders Mass Evacuations
In southwest France, nearly 200,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes as major wildfires spread through the Gironde and Landes regions.
French President Emmanuel Macron has ordered military support to strengthen firefighting operations and assist emergency services.
Authorities also ordered the precautionary evacuation of nearly 60,000 additional people near Bordeaux after the flames advanced toward populated areas.
The wildfire has already destroyed thousands of hectares of forest, damaged dozens of homes and injured several firefighters.
Officials have described the blaze as one of the largest recorded in the region. Constantly changing winds have made it particularly difficult for crews to predict and contain the fire.
Spain Battles Historic Wildfire Near Madrid
Spain is also facing a major wildfire emergency after several fires west of Madrid merged into a huge blaze.
The Spanish government has declared a national emergency. Around 25,000 people have been evacuated, while another 40,000 residents have been ordered to remain indoors because of dangerous smoke and rapidly changing conditions.
Madrid regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso described the blaze as the worst wildfire in the region’s history.
Extreme heat, strong winds and multiple fire fronts have created conditions that prevent firefighters from directly attacking some sections of the blaze.
Military emergency units have been deployed to protect nearby communities and help prevent further destruction.
Authorities are also monitoring another major wildfire in neighbouring Ávila province, raising concerns that separate fires could potentially merge.

The fires have consumed vast areas of forests, farmland and vegetation across France and Spain.
