Polish security services are reviewing a terrorism warning issued by Belarus after authorities in Minsk claimed that an individual was planning an attack against the children of a Belarusian activist living in Poland.
Polish officials have stressed that reports of potential terrorist activity are treated seriously, although authorities have not confirmed the credibility of the alleged plot.
Belarus Shares Details of Alleged Threat
According to Belarusian authorities, officials met with Poland’s chargé d’affaires in Minsk, Krzysztof Ożanna, on Thursday to share information about the alleged threat.
Belarus claims the suspected individual lives in Poland, has a previous criminal conviction and recently lost additional protection and legal residency rights.
Belarusian officials allege that the person intended to target the children of a Belarusian activist in Poland as an act of revenge.
According to Minsk, the alleged motive was linked to the activist’s failure to help the suspect retain their immigration status.
The Belarusian government said it is prepared to provide further information to Polish authorities if requested.
Polish Security Services Assess the Warning
Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for the minister responsible for coordinating Poland’s special services, declined to discuss operational details.
However, he confirmed that Polish security agencies were taking the information seriously.
Dobrzyński said intelligence services do not ignore reports involving potential threats to public safety. Instead, they assess the information carefully before determining whether further action is required.
He also noted that security agencies generally avoid discussing active investigations publicly.
Polish Foreign Minister Confirms Review
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski confirmed that the government was examining the information provided by Belarus.
Speaking to reporters in Warsaw, Sikorski said authorities carefully verify every terrorism warning.
He added that officials were still assessing the information and had not yet reached a final conclusion about the alleged threat.
No Confirmation of Planned Attack
Polish authorities have not confirmed that the alleged plot is genuine.
They have also not announced any arrests connected to the warning or provided evidence publicly demonstrating that an attack was being prepared.
The investigation therefore remains at the assessment stage as Polish security agencies examine the information received from Belarus.
Security Services Continue Monitoring the Situation
The warning comes amid strained relations between Poland and Belarus, making the circumstances surrounding the allegation particularly sensitive.
For now, Polish authorities are keeping operational details confidential while evaluating the intelligence.
Officials say their priority is to determine whether there is a genuine threat and, if necessary, take measures to protect those potentially at risk.
