Pakistan social media regulation will come under fresh discussion as the Interior Ministry prepares consultations with key stakeholders.
Sources said the ministry wants to address growing concerns about child exploitation and inappropriate content online. Officials will also examine ways to strengthen the country’s social media rules.
One proposal would set a minimum age for social media users. However, the ministry has not announced a final age limit.
The planned meeting will bring together officials from several government and law enforcement bodies. Representatives from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), and federal and provincial police departments will attend.
Officials to Review Child Exploitation Cases
The meeting will examine cases involving child exploitation and obscene content on social media.
Officials will also discuss stronger safeguards for children who use digital platforms. The NCCIA already handles cybercrime complaints and advises parents to monitor children’s online activity and use privacy controls.
The issue has also reached the courts. On August 31, the Islamabad High Court asked several ministries and regulators to respond to a petition seeking rules for social media use by children under 16. The petition also calls for an effective age-verification system.
Family Vlogging Faces Scrutiny
Officials will also examine concerns about family vlogging.
Sources said the government wants to consider measures against inappropriate content produced under the label of family entertainment. The discussion could focus on children’s privacy and their exposure to harmful online material.
However, officials have not announced any final restrictions. The Interior Ministry plans to consult the relevant institutions before it makes decisions.
Officials to Study Foreign Social Media Policies
The meeting will also consider social media policies from Australia and other countries.
Australian authorities introduced social media age restrictions in December 2025. The rules require covered platforms to take steps to prevent children under 16 from holding accounts.
Pakistani officials may examine such international approaches while developing their own regulatory framework. However, the government has not announced that it will copy Australia’s system.
Possible Platform Bans Under Discussion
Sources also said officials may consider restrictions on some social media platforms.
At present, the proposal remains under discussion. The Interior Ministry has not announced any decision to ban a specific platform.
The upcoming consultation will therefore allow regulators, investigators and police officials to present their views.
The meeting could shape the next stage of Pakistan’s social media rules. Child safety, age limits, online exploitation and inappropriate content will remain key issues in the discussion.
For now, officials have stressed consultation before taking any final step.
