The United Kingdom has announced a fresh round of Russia sanctions, targeting banks, oil tankers and industrial companies as the government seeks to increase economic pressure on Moscow over the war in Ukraine.
British officials said the latest measures are designed to disrupt financial networks supporting Russia’s military operations and reduce the country’s oil revenues.
UK Expands Russia Sanctions
Under the latest package, Britain added 13 new designations and six specifications under its Russia sanctions regime.
The measures target:
- Six Russian banks
- Six oil tankers linked to Russia’s shadow fleet
- Four Russian industrial companies
The government said some of the targeted companies are involved in importing tantalum and niobium, rare metals that have applications in military equipment and other advanced technologies.
Focus Remains on Russian Oil Revenue
A major focus of the latest Russia sanctions is Moscow’s oil industry.
British officials say oil exports remain one of Russia’s most important sources of revenue and argue that these earnings help finance its military campaign in Ukraine.
The sanctions also target vessels allegedly connected to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet. These ships are accused of helping transport Russian oil while attempting to circumvent international restrictions.
By targeting both financial institutions and shipping networks, the UK hopes to make it more difficult for Russia to generate and move revenue from its energy exports.
More Than 3,400 Sanctions Since 2022
Britain says it has imposed sanctions on more than 3,400 individuals, companies and ships since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The government argues that the measures have increased economic pressure on Moscow and restricted access to important financial and industrial resources.
The UK also plans to continue coordinating its sanctions policy with international partners.
UK Promises Further Action
British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the government would continue increasing pressure on Russia until a lasting peace is achieved.
He said sanctions would remain an important part of Britain’s broader strategy to support Ukraine and challenge Russia’s ability to sustain its military campaign.
British officials have repeatedly indicated that additional sanctions could follow if Moscow continues its war.
Russia Rejects Latest Measures
The Russian Embassy in London rejected the new sanctions and argued that previous restrictions had failed to achieve their strategic objectives.
Russian officials have repeatedly criticised Western sanctions as ineffective and damaging to international economic relations.
Despite Moscow’s objections, the UK maintains that sanctions are limiting Russia’s financial and industrial capabilities.
