The Saim Ayub maiden T20 century helped Jamaica Kingsmen secure an 11-run victory over St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League.
Ayub produced a brilliant innings at Warner Park on Thursday. The Pakistan batter smashed 102 from 58 deliveries. His innings included six fours and eight sixes.
Kingsmen posted 182-7 after choosing to bat first. Ayub played the key role after his side suffered several early setbacks.
Ayub Leads Kingsmen’s Recovery
The Pakistan left-hander entered the game at No. 3. Naseem Shah had dismissed Keacy Carty with the very first delivery of the match.
Ayub immediately faced a strong Patriots attack. Naseem, Jason Holder and Wanindu Hasaranga all tested the Kingsmen batter. He responded by attacking whenever the opportunity came.
Jamaica slipped to 63-4 before captain Rovman Powell joined Ayub. The pair rebuilt the innings with a crucial 72-run partnership for the fifth wicket.
Powell made 21 from 17 balls. Hasaranga eventually ended the partnership, but Ayub continued his aggressive approach.
Obed McCoy finally dismissed Ayub in the 19th over. By then, Kingsmen had reached 164. Keemo Paul then added an unbeaten 25 to push the total to 182-7.
McCoy, Naseem and Hasaranga each claimed two wickets for the Patriots.
Patriots Fall Short Despite Late Fight
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots needed 183 to win. They finished their 20 overs on 171-6 and suffered their fourth defeat of the CPL campaign.
Andre Fletcher gave the chase a strong start. He scored 55 from 38 balls before Ayub ended his innings with a caught-and-bowled dismissal.
The Patriots later lost momentum and faced a difficult equation. They needed 71 runs from 29 balls.
Holder and Dasun Shanaka then produced a late counterattack. Holder struck 34 from 23 deliveries, including three fours and two sixes.
Hunain Shah dismissed Holder in the 19th over. That left the Patriots needing 31 runs from the final six balls.
Shanaka refused to give up. He attacked Odean Smith and smashed three sixes in the over. The over produced 19 runs.
Shanaka finished unbeaten on 35 from only 18 balls. His late assault, however, could not prevent Jamaica Kingsmen from completing an 11-run victory.
Ayub Makes His Mark in CPL
The performance gave Ayub his first T20 century and underlined his ability to change a match with aggressive batting.
His 102-run knock proved decisive. The Kingsmen relied on his innings to recover from a difficult start and establish a winning total.
For the Patriots, the defeat marked another setback in their campaign. Despite their late fight, the target remained out of reach.
The result also gave Jamaica Kingsmen a memorable CPL victory, with Ayub’s century standing out as the defining performance of the match.
