US President Donald Trump has suggested giving the state of New Mexico a new name, proposing “New America” in his latest naming idea. The proposal quickly drew criticism from the state’s governor, who rejected the suggestion.
Trump made the comment on Sunday through a social media post. He said several people had suggested replacing “New Mexico” with “New America.” Trump described the proposed name as more prestigious and beautiful for the state.
The White House also shared an image showing the word “Mexico” crossed out in the state’s name. It was replaced with “America.” However, reports from US media outlets suggested that the idea may have started as an internet hoax.
New Mexico Governor Rejects Trump Proposal
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham dismissed the proposal. She said the state’s name was not open for discussion and pointed to its long history.
Lujan Grisham also accused Trump of trying to divert attention from other issues. She specifically mentioned rising gas prices as one of the concerns facing Americans.
The proposal comes as Trump continues a series of controversial name changes and suggestions. Last week, he floated the idea of calling the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait.” He later suggested that he may not have been serious about the idea.
Trump Has Pushed Other Name Changes
Trump has already used his second administration to pursue other geographic name changes. On his first day back in the White House in 2025, he renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” Mexico rejected the change.
Canada has also opposed Trump’s attempt to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” The proposal came during a period of heightened trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa.
Trump’s latest suggestion has therefore added another unusual chapter to his approach to geographic names. For now, however, New Mexico’s official name remains unchanged.
The governor’s response also makes clear that the proposal faces strong opposition within the state. New Mexico has used its current name since long before the United States was established.
