US President Donald Trump delivered a fiery and often humorous speech at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, taking fresh aim at major news organisations while also stressing the importance of free speech and open political debate.
The annual event, which celebrates journalism and press freedom, returned after the previous gathering was canceled following a shooting near the original venue. This year’s dinner was held at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington under heightened security.
Trump Mixes Jokes With Media Criticism
Speaking before hundreds of journalists, government officials and media executives, Trump began with jokes before turning his attention to what he described as the “fake news” media.
He joked that “the second time is always better” and said he respected “most” journalists. However, he soon shifted to criticism of reporters and accused some of suffering from what he called “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
The president also joked about seeking another presidential term, drawing laughter from the audience despite constitutional limits on presidential terms.
Correspondents’ Dinner Returns After Shooting
The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) moved the event to a different venue after a shooting near the Washington Hilton forced the cancellation of the original dinner.
WHCA President Weijia Jiang said the association would not allow violence to define the long-running tradition. She also confirmed that the dinner is expected to return to the Washington Hilton next year.
Trump also recognised Secret Service officer Victor Gonzalez for his bravery during the earlier shooting incident.
Trump Defends Free Speech Amid Media Tensions
Despite repeatedly criticising major news organisations, including CNN, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, Trump stressed the importance of peaceful political disagreement.
He said Americans should settle their differences through “open and vigorous debate” rather than violence.
The president acknowledged the often-contentious relationship between his administration and the press. He also joked that journalists might struggle to find stories once he eventually leaves office.
Journalists Recognised for Investigative Reporting
The ceremony also recognised journalists for outstanding reporting and investigative work.
Among the award recipients was a Wall Street Journal team recognised for reporting on Trump’s past connections with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Despite the political tensions surrounding the event, the awards maintained the dinner’s traditional focus on recognising journalism and investigative reporting.
Security Tightened Around the Event
Security was significantly tighter than at previous dinners.
Guests underwent multiple security screenings before entering the venue, while several streets around the hotel were closed to traffic.
Secret Service agents and local law enforcement maintained a heavy security presence throughout the evening.
Authorities also continued legal proceedings against the suspect arrested in connection with the earlier shooting, who faces charges related to an alleged attempt to assassinate the president.
Trump Administration and Media Remain at Odds
The dinner took place amid continuing tensions between the Trump administration and several major US news organisations.
Trump has repeatedly criticised media coverage of his administration and accused some news outlets of political bias.
At the same time, journalists and press organisations have defended the importance of independent reporting and accountability.
