WhatsApp cloud backup could soon give iPhone users a secure alternative to Apple’s iCloud for storing chat history. Although the feature remains under development, early previews suggest it will offer greater flexibility, stronger privacy, and more control over where conversations are stored.
The feature was first spotted by WABetaInfo inside a test version of WhatsApp. While Meta has not officially announced it, the preview provides an early look at one of the app’s most significant upcoming features.
WhatsApp Cloud Backup Offers an Alternative to iCloud
For years, iPhone users have depended on iCloud to back up WhatsApp chats, photos, and videos.
The upcoming WhatsApp cloud backup feature would allow users to choose between Apple’s iCloud service and WhatsApp’s own cloud storage platform.
According to early reports, WhatsApp plans to offer 2GB of free storage. Users who need more space may later purchase larger storage plans, with some reports suggesting options of up to 1TB.
The new system aims to provide greater flexibility while reducing dependence on third-party cloud services.
Better Privacy for WhatsApp Cloud Backup
One of the biggest improvements involves security.
Current WhatsApp backups stored on iCloud support encryption, but users must activate that option manually.
Under the new WhatsApp cloud backup system, end-to-end encryption will reportedly protect every backup by default.
Only the account owner will have access to the stored data. Even WhatsApp and its parent company, Meta, will not be able to view messages or media files.
Users will also be able to protect backups with a passkey. Traditional passwords and a 64-digit encryption key will remain available for those who prefer them.
Feature Remains Under Development
Meta has not confirmed when the WhatsApp cloud backup feature will become available.
Reports also suggest the company is developing a similar backup service for Android devices, where users currently rely on Google Drive.
If launched, the feature will provide millions of users with another secure way to protect conversations while expanding WhatsApp’s privacy-focused services.
Industry observers believe the update could become one of WhatsApp’s most useful improvements for iPhone users, especially for those seeking greater control over their personal data.
