WhatsApp voice-to-text messaging is reportedly in development for Android, giving users a possible new way to write messages by speaking instead of typing.
The feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.37.8 by WABetaInfo. However, it is still under development and has not yet been made available to beta testers. WhatsApp has also not announced a public release date.
How WhatsApp Voice-to-Text Could Work
The upcoming feature is designed to turn spoken words into a regular text message.
According to the report, WhatsApp plans to add a new button inside the chat bar. Users could tap the button and speak their message while the app displays a “Listening…” indicator.
After WhatsApp converts the speech into text, users would reportedly be able to review the message before sending it. They could also make changes if the transcription contains mistakes.
Once satisfied, users could send the result as a normal text message.
Therefore, the recipient would not receive a voice recording. Instead, they would see only the written message created from the user’s speech.
The feature is reportedly being developed for individual chats, group conversations and channels.
Offline Dictation Could Be Possible
One of the most notable parts of the reported feature is its potential offline support.
WhatsApp could use language packs stored directly on a user’s device to process spoken words. This would allow the speech recognition system to work without an active internet connection, provided the required language pack has already been downloaded.
The approach builds on WhatsApp’s existing voice-message transcription technology. The company already uses downloaded language packs to process voice messages on the device.
WhatsApp recently expanded its voice-transcription language support on Android, adding more English variants as well as German, French, Italian and Japanese. Existing support includes languages such as Arabic, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese and Russian.
Voice-to-Text Is Different From Voice Notes
The new tool would work differently from WhatsApp’s traditional voice messages.
With a voice note, users record their voice and send the audio directly to another person or group. The recipient can then listen to the recording.
The reported voice-to-text feature would remove that audio step.
Instead, users would speak their message, review the resulting text and send it as written content. This could be useful for people who want the convenience of speaking without sending an audio message.
It could also help users who find typing difficult or want to compose longer messages more quickly.
WhatsApp Has Not Confirmed a Release
Despite the reported development, users should not expect the feature to appear immediately.
WABetaInfo says the voice-to-text tool is not currently available to beta testers. WhatsApp has not confirmed when testing will begin or whether the feature will eventually reach the stable Android app.
The design could also change before any wider release. The location of the new button and other parts of the interface remain subject to change during development.
For now, the feature remains an experiment. WhatsApp regularly tests new tools before deciding whether to release them more broadly.
If the company moves ahead with the feature, Android users could eventually have another option for composing messages: speak naturally, review the generated text and then send it without sharing a voice recording.
