The National Coal Council has urged the Trump administration to provide financial support for existing coal-fired power plants and help finance new facilities. The group believes these steps will strengthen America’s energy sector and improve long-term electricity reliability.
During a meeting in Washington, council members presented their recommendations. They also urged the US Department of Energy to expand support for coal-related projects.
Coal Industry Requests Financial Assistance
Industry leaders proposed grants, loan guarantees and other financial incentives for coal-fired power plants and supply chain projects.
They also encouraged the federal government to invest in coal infrastructure. In addition, they recommended long-term power purchase agreements to support electricity generation from coal.
Council members believe these measures will improve energy security. They also expect the plan to protect thousands of jobs in the mining and power industries.
Trump Revives National Coal Council
President Donald Trump restored the National Coal Council after the previous administration stopped its activities.
The advisory group includes executives from Peabody Energy, Warrior Met Coal and Core Natural Resources.
The council regularly advises the Department of Energy on policies that affect the coal industry.
Industry Pushes for Regulatory Reforms
Industry representatives also urged the administration to remove regulations that delay new coal-fired power projects.
They recommended simpler federal coal leasing procedures. They also urged officials to repeal greenhouse gas rules affecting coal facilities.
Supporters say these reforms would encourage investment. They also believe the changes would strengthen domestic energy production.
Coal Still Plays a Major Energy Role
Coal production in the United States increased by about 3% last year. Output reached approximately 528 million tonnes because electricity demand grew and natural gas prices increased.
Meanwhile, coal generated around 17% of US electricity in 2025. Although renewable energy continues to expand, coal remains an important part of the country’s energy mix.
The Trump administration continues to support a diverse energy strategy. Officials say coal will remain a key source of reliable electricity for the United States.
