Apple is reportedly preparing to launch its first-ever water-resistant iPad mini, marking one of the biggest upgrades to the compact tablet in years. According to recent reports, the new model is expected to arrive later this year with a redesigned body, an OLED display, and enhanced durability that could make it suitable for use near pools, beaches, and other outdoor environments.
Unlike current iPad models, which do not carry any official water-resistance certification, the upcoming device is expected to feature advanced engineering designed to better protect it from water and dust.
Apple Could Introduce Its First Water-Resistant iPad
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has been developing a redesigned iPad mini with improved protection against water. While existing iPads are not officially rated for water resistance, the next-generation model is expected to change that.
The company is reportedly redesigning the tablet’s internal structure to reduce the number of openings where water can enter, making it significantly more durable for everyday use.
Innovative Speaker Design Eliminates Traditional Openings
One of the biggest engineering changes involves a completely new speaker system.
Instead of relying on conventional speaker grilles, Apple is said to be using a vibration-based acoustic system that allows sound to travel through flat sections of the device’s chassis. This eliminates the need for large speaker holes, which are among the biggest entry points for water and dust.
The technology is reportedly based on an Apple patent first filed in 2014 for a mechanically actuated panel acoustic system.
What Water Resistance Rating Could It Receive?
Apple has not confirmed an official IP rating for the upcoming iPad mini.
However, many analysts believe it could receive a certification similar to the iPhone’s IP68 rating, which allows devices to survive underwater for up to 30 minutes at depths of six metres.
Even if Apple opts for a slightly lower certification, it would still represent the first officially water-resistant iPad in the company’s history.
OLED Display Set to Transform the iPad Mini
The new iPad mini is also expected to receive a major display upgrade.
Reports indicate Apple will replace the current LCD panel with an 8.4-inch OLED display, offering:
- Richer colours
- True blacks
- Higher contrast
- Better battery efficiency
- Improved viewing experience
The OLED display would make the iPad mini only the second iPad lineup to adopt OLED technology after the iPad Pro.
However, reports suggest the screen will remain limited to a 60Hz refresh rate, meaning Apple is unlikely to introduce ProMotion on this model.
Expected Launch Timeline
Industry reports indicate Samsung Display has already begun mass production of OLED panels for the upcoming tablet.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman expects Apple to unveil the redesigned iPad mini around October 2026, although Apple has yet to officially confirm any launch plans.
