Costa Rican authorities have arrested Alejandro Arias, widely known as “Diablo,” the country’s most wanted fugitive who was also sought by the United States on drug trafficking charges.
The arrest marks a major breakthrough in the country’s fight against organized crime and international drug trafficking.
High-Profile Arrest After Armed Police Operation
According to Costa Rican judicial authorities, Arias, 41, was captured in the northern Caribbean region following an intense police operation.
Officials said the arrest came after an armed confrontation between police officers and members of Arias’ criminal organization that lasted nearly an hour.
Two additional suspects with significant criminal backgrounds were also taken into custody during the operation.
US Had Offered $500,000 Reward
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had identified Arias as the leader of a violent transnational criminal organization.
Last year, the agency announced a $500,000 reward for information leading to his arrest, highlighting his alleged role in international drug trafficking networks.

Judicial Investigation Agency Director Michael Soto described the operation as one of the country’s most significant recent law enforcement successes.
Authorities believe Arias played a central role in escalating violence across Costa Rica, with rival drug trafficking groups increasingly clashing over criminal territory.
