Indian Government Seeks More Time as Youth Protesters Demand Education Minister’s Resignation

India youth protests

India’s youth-led protest movement has intensified after the government requested additional time to respond to demands for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The dispute follows a series of controversial examination paper leaks that have sparked nationwide anger. On Friday, senior government ministers met representatives of the growing youth movement in New Delhi. The talks offered a potential path toward dialogue after weeks of demonstrations.

Government Requests More Time After Talks

Following the meeting, protest leaders said the government requested time until Saturday afternoon to provide its final response.

However, youth leaders maintained that Pradhan’s resignation remains their main demand. They warned that demonstrations would continue and could expand if the government takes no action.

Government representatives described the talks as constructive. They also confirmed that negotiations would resume on Saturday.

Youth Protest Movement Gains Momentum

The movement began online as a satirical campaign. However, it has since developed into one of the biggest public challenges to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in recent years.

Public anger grew after authorities cancelled a national medical entrance examination following allegations that its question paper had leaked before the test.

The controversy affected nearly two million students. Consequently, concerns over examination security and government accountability spread across India.

Protesters Present Three Key Demands

In addition to demanding Pradhan’s resignation, protesters are calling for:

  • Withdrawal of police cases filed against demonstrators.
  • Financial compensation for families of students who reportedly died by suicide following the examination controversy.
  • Stronger government measures to prevent future examination paper leaks.

Protest leaders say these demands are necessary to restore confidence in India’s education system.

Nationwide Demonstrations Continue

While negotiations continued in Delhi, demonstrations spread across several Indian states.

Protests took place in West Bengal, Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. Students, youth activists and opposition supporters organised rallies and carried placards demanding accountability.

Some protesters also boycotted educational institutions.

Meanwhile, the dispute has affected India’s Parliament. Opposition lawmakers have repeatedly demanded the education minister’s resignation, disrupting legislative proceedings during the week.

Security Tightened Across New Delhi

Authorities maintained strict security measures as thousands of protesters gathered near Jantar Mantar.

Several metro stations remained closed. In addition, authorities suspended mobile internet services in parts of central Delhi for another day.

The government defended the restrictions. Officials said the measures were necessary to maintain public order and protect people during large demonstrations.

Political Pressure on Modi Government Grows

Political analysts say the protests reflect wider frustration among India’s younger population.

Concerns over unemployment, examination irregularities and governance have helped expand the movement beyond the original paper-leak controversy.

Although India’s next national election remains several years away, upcoming state elections could feel the impact of growing public dissatisfaction.

For now, attention remains focused on Saturday’s negotiations. The government’s response could determine whether the dispute moves toward a settlement or whether India’s youth protest movement grows even further.
