The federal government has approved the Army deployed in Rawalpindi for six months after the Punjab government requested military assistance for security duties.
The Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control issued a notification under Article 245 of the Constitution of Pakistan.
According to the notification, the Punjab Home Department submitted the request through a letter dated July 22, 2026.
Three Army Companies Assigned to Rawalpindi
The federal government has authorized the deployment of three companies of the Pakistan Army in Rawalpindi.
The troops will perform sensitive security duties across the district. They will also assist authorities in preventing any undesirable situation.
Moreover, the deployment will allow security personnel to respond quickly to unforeseen circumstances.
Army to Support District Administration
The Pakistan Army will assist the Rawalpindi district administration with maintaining law and order.
Troops will also strengthen security at sensitive locations and important routes across the city.
District authorities can request military assistance whenever they consider it necessary, according to the notification.
Deployment Will Continue for Six Months
The military deployment will take effect immediately and remain in place for six months.
The decision comes as the Punjab government seeks additional security support for Rawalpindi.
Authorities will use the deployment to improve security arrangements and prepare for any potential emergency.
Article 245 Provides Constitutional Basis
The federal government authorized the deployment under Article 245 of the Constitution.
The provision allows the armed forces to assist civil authorities when required.
In Rawalpindi, the Army will therefore work alongside the district administration rather than replace civilian authorities.
Security Arrangements Strengthened
The deployment is designed to strengthen security at key locations and routes throughout Rawalpindi.
According to the notification, troops will remain available to support the district administration when required.
Meanwhile, authorities will continue to monitor the security situation and take additional measures if necessary.
