Wegovy Weight-Loss Pill Launches in Germany

Wegovy weight-loss pill launches in Germany

Novo Nordisk has launched its Wegovy weight-loss pill in Germany, making the country the first European Union market to offer the oral version of the popular obesity treatment.

The Danish pharmaceutical company confirmed the launch on Tuesday. Meanwhile, investors are watching the new pill closely as Novo Nordisk tries to strengthen its position against U.S. rival Eli Lilly.

Novo previously built a strong position in the obesity market with injectable Wegovy. However, Lilly’s Zepbound has increased competitive pressure on the Danish drugmaker.

The global obesity treatment market could exceed $100 billion a year by 2030. Therefore, both pharmaceutical giants are racing to capture a larger share of the growing market.

Germany Becomes First EU Market for Wegovy Pill

Germany represents an important market for innovative medicines. It also has the largest pharmaceutical market among the 27 European Union countries.

As a result, Novo Nordisk chose Germany as the first EU market for its oral Wegovy treatment.

The company had already launched the pill in the United States, Britain and the United Arab Emirates. Now, the German launch marks another major step in its international expansion.

Wegovy Pill Price in Germany

The price of the Wegovy weight-loss pill will vary according to dosage.

Novo Nordisk said the tablet prices will remain comparable with those of its Wegovy injection pens. Pharmacy retail prices for the pens currently range from around €170 to €280.

Therefore, German patients can expect the cost of the oral treatment to depend on the prescribed dose.

Novo Nordisk Faces Growing Competition

Novo Nordisk once dominated the rapidly expanding GLP-1 weight-loss market. However, Eli Lilly has steadily increased its presence with Zepbound.

That competition has become especially important as demand for obesity treatments continues to rise.

Moreover, the pharmaceutical companies are now competing in the oral treatment market. Pills could attract people who prefer tablets over injections, potentially expanding the use of GLP-1 medicines.

Wegovy Pill Contains Semaglutide

The new Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in Novo Nordisk’s injectable Wegovy.

Novo also uses semaglutide in Ozempic, its well-known diabetes treatment.

However, the oral version gives patients another way to receive the medicine. Consequently, Novo hopes the tablet can broaden the appeal of its obesity treatment.

The tablet does not simply represent a new product format. Instead, it gives Novo another opportunity to compete for patients who may prefer oral medication.

EU Approves Oral Wegovy

Novo Nordisk received key regulatory approvals before launching the tablet in Germany.

The European Medicines Agency issued a positive recommendation for the oral Wegovy treatment in May. Then, the European Commission granted approval in July.

That approval cleared the way for Novo to market the treatment across the European Union. Germany subsequently became the first EU country to launch the pill.

Eli Lilly Also Targets the Pill Market

Eli Lilly is also moving aggressively into oral obesity treatments.

The company launched its weight-loss pill Foundayo in the United Kingdom in late August. In addition, regulators are reviewing the treatment in more than 40 markets.

Lilly expects to expand the product across major markets during 2027.

Meanwhile, Novo Nordisk is using the early launch of its Wegovy pill to strengthen its position before competition becomes even tougher.

Oral GLP-1 Drugs Could Reshape the Market

The growing popularity of weight-loss pills could change the GLP-1 market significantly.

Novo Nordisk has said pills could account for more than one-third of GLP-1 use by 2030. If that forecast becomes reality, oral treatments could become a major part of the obesity drug business.

For patients, tablets may offer an alternative to injectable treatments. At the same time, pharmaceutical companies see enormous commercial potential in the growing demand.

As a result, Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly will likely continue competing on effectiveness, pricing, availability and convenience.

Wegovy Pill Gives Novo Nordisk Another Opportunity

The German launch gives Novo Nordisk a fresh opportunity to strengthen its obesity business.

The company remains one of the biggest names in the GLP-1 market. Nevertheless, pressure from Eli Lilly has forced Novo to find new ways to maintain its position.

The oral Wegovy treatment could therefore become an important part of that strategy.

Germany’s launch also gives Novo a foothold in the European market before the company expands the pill into additional EU countries.

Investors Watch Novo Nordisk’s Next Move

Investors are closely monitoring the performance of the new pill as competition intensifies.

Novo Nordisk is also preparing for its capital markets day on September 21. The event could provide further insight into the company’s strategy for its obesity business.

For now, the Wegovy weight-loss pill gives Novo Nordisk another weapon in its battle with Eli Lilly.

As oral GLP-1 treatments gain attention, the competition between the two pharmaceutical giants could become even more intense. Germany’s launch therefore marks an important new stage in the global race to dominate the next generation of weight-loss medicines.
