A devastating terrorist attack on a joint security checkpost in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tank district killed 15 people, including 14 security personnel, early Friday, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The military described the assault as one of the deadliest attacks in recent months. Security personnel fought the attackers before an explosive-filled vehicle struck the checkpost and caused a massive blast.
Security Forces Repel Initial Assault
According to the ISPR, heavily armed militants attempted to storm the joint police checkpost.
Security personnel immediately returned fire and prevented the attackers from breaching the facility’s perimeter. During the exchange, troops killed 15 militants, according to the military.
However, the attackers then drove an explosives-laden vehicle into the checkpost’s outer wall. The resulting explosion caused extensive damage to the facility.
Fifteen Personnel Killed in Attack
The blast killed 15 people, including:
- 12 military personnel
- 2 police officers
- 1 Forest Department official
The ISPR praised the personnel for their courage and professionalism during the attack.
Military officials said the fallen personnel defended the checkpost despite facing a heavily armed assault.
Security Forces Launch Clearance Operation
Following the attack, security forces launched a sanitisation operation around the checkpost.
Troops searched nearby areas for any remaining militants and potential threats. The military also reaffirmed its commitment to counterterrorism operations under the Azm-i-Istehkam national strategy.
Officials said security forces will continue targeting militant networks to prevent further attacks.
Terrorist Violence Rises in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
The Tank attack comes as militant violence continues to challenge security forces across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Last week, security forces reportedly killed 24 militants during intelligence-based operations in Bannu and surrounding areas following attacks on law enforcement personnel and civilians.
Earlier this year, a suicide bombing at the Fateh Khel police post in Bannu killed 15 police officers after militants rammed an explosives-filled vehicle into the facility.
Security Situation Remains Challenging
The Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) has reported a significant increase in violence across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over the past year.
The latest attack further highlights the security challenges facing the province. Authorities say security forces remain on high alert and will continue intelligence-based operations against militant networks.
Officials have also pledged to strengthen security around sensitive installations and protect civilians from further terrorist attacks.
