For years, a major iPhone software update often felt like a fresh coat of paint. Apple would change the design, add a few new tools and introduce features that many people barely used.
iOS 27 is different.
The biggest question is no longer simply what Apple added. Instead, it is how much of the new experience your current iPhone can actually handle.
Apple has placed Siri AI at the centre of iOS 27. The new assistant can hold more natural conversations, understand personal context and work with what appears on your screen. It also brings a dedicated Siri app and new ways to use Apple Intelligence across the iPhone.
However, you do not necessarily need an iPhone 18 Pro to enjoy the update.
Here are eight iOS 27 features worth checking before you spend money on a new iPhone.
1. Siri AI finally becomes more useful
Siri gets the biggest upgrade in years.
With iOS 27, Siri AI can handle more natural conversations and answer broader questions. It can also use personal context to help you find information across apps and understand what is happening on your screen.
Apple has also introduced a dedicated Siri app. You can continue to activate Siri in the usual way, but the new app gives conversations a more central place on the iPhone.
There is an important catch, though.
Apple Intelligence does not work on every iPhone that supports iOS 27. Apple lists the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, plus all iPhone 16 models and newer models, as compatible with Apple Intelligence.
Siri AI is initially rolling out in English. Apple also warns that usage limits may apply, while availability can vary by region and language.
2. Your old iPhone can feel faster
You do not need a new camera or processor to notice every iOS 27 improvement.
Apple says the update improves responsiveness across the system. App launches, search, AirDrop and other everyday tasks receive performance improvements. Apple describes iOS 27 as making the iPhone more responsive and reliable.
That matters because performance improvements work quietly in the background.
You do not need to remember to activate them. If your existing iPhone supports iOS 27, you may simply notice that everyday tasks feel smoother after the update.
3. iPhone Handoff makes two iPhones easier to use
iOS 27 also introduces iPhone Handoff.
The feature lets people with supported carriers move between two compatible iPhones while keeping the same phone number active. That could prove useful for people who maintain separate work and personal devices.
However, carrier support remains essential. Apple says the feature requires a supported carrier, so availability will not be identical everywhere.
For most users, this will not justify buying another iPhone. For people who regularly switch between two devices, however, it could remove a major annoyance.
4. Find My gives location sharing more flexibility
Location sharing also becomes more flexible in iOS 27.
Instead of relying only on fixed sharing periods, users get more control over how long they share their location. Apple is also adding more privacy-focused controls.
That could make the feature useful in everyday situations where you want someone to know where you are temporarily, rather than giving them ongoing access.
In other words, Find My becomes less of an all-or-nothing decision.
5. Photos get more powerful AI tools
Apple Intelligence also moves deeper into the Photos experience.
iOS 27 adds new AI-powered editing tools, including Spatial Reframing, Extend and an upgraded Clean Up feature. Apple also says Image Playground can now create more photorealistic images.
These tools show Apple’s broader AI strategy.
Instead of making AI a separate chatbot that you open occasionally, Apple is putting it inside apps people already use. That approach could make the technology feel much more practical.
6. Liquid Glass gets another refinement
Apple is also refining the Liquid Glass interface.
The company says iOS 27 improves contrast and creates more uniform refraction. App icons also receive additional detail, while a new slider lets users adjust the appearance of Liquid Glass from clearer to more tinted.
This is not the kind of feature that will convince everyone to upgrade their phone.
Still, it could make a difference if you disliked the heavier translucent appearance of the previous design.
7. CarPlay can show video when parked
CarPlay is gaining another interesting capability.
Developers can create CarPlay apps with video-browsing features. However, Apple keeps an important safety restriction in place: video playback works when the vehicle is parked.
That makes the feature more useful while charging an electric vehicle, waiting at a pickup point or sitting somewhere before a journey.
There is another limitation. Your car must support the relevant CarPlay technology. Installing iOS 27 alone will not automatically add video support to every existing vehicle.
8. Apple Cash can help split bills
Apple is also tackling a much smaller problem: splitting a restaurant bill.
In supported markets, Apple Intelligence can help users work out their share of a receipt. The system can use information from the receipt and calculate the amount, including tax and tip.
It is a relatively simple feature. However, it highlights Apple’s approach to AI.
The company wants the iPhone to handle small tasks that normally require manual calculations.
So, should you update to iOS 27?
For most compatible iPhone owners, there is little reason to skip iOS 27 simply because they do not own Apple’s latest hardware.
The update brings performance improvements, design refinements and useful features across the system. Many of those changes do not require Apple Intelligence.
However, the biggest distinction comes down to AI.
If you own an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 or newer model, you can access Apple Intelligence features supported by your device. Older iPhones can run iOS 27, but they cannot access the full Apple Intelligence experience.
That difference matters if Siri AI is the main reason you are considering an upgrade.
Do you actually need an iPhone 18 Pro?
If your current iPhone already supports Apple Intelligence, iOS 27 is not, by itself, a strong reason to buy an iPhone 18 Pro.
The iPhone 18 Pro brings newer hardware, cameras and other device-specific improvements. However, Apple’s latest software does not reserve every important feature for the newest phone.
In fact, iOS 27 makes the upgrade decision more interesting.
If you own an older iPhone, you can still receive the software update and many of its improvements. You simply miss some of Apple’s most advanced AI features.
So before buying a new iPhone, check your current model.
You may already have access to much of what makes iOS 27 interesting.

However, iOS 27 compatibility and Apple Intelligence compatibility are not the same thing.
Apple Intelligence works on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, along with all iPhone 16 models and later. Some features also depend on language and region.
That is the key point for anyone considering an iPhone 18 Pro.
Update your current iPhone first. Then decide whether the hardware upgrade gives you enough extra value to justify the price.
For many users, iOS 27 may prove that their existing iPhone still has plenty of life left.
