Nvidia is reportedly in discussions to provide up to $250 billion in financing guarantees for OpenAI as part of one of the world’s largest artificial intelligence infrastructure projects.
According to reports, the proposed agreement would support OpenAI’s plans to lease a massive AI data center currently being developed in southern Ohio, marking a significant shift in how the company manages its computing infrastructure.
Massive AI Project Could Cost Over $500 Billion
The Ohio project is expected to become one of the largest AI data centers ever built.
Developed by SoftBank’s energy division, the facility is expected to deliver 10 gigawatts of computing power, with total development costs estimated to exceed $500 billion, including the advanced AI chips required to operate the center.
The reported financing guarantee from Nvidia would help secure funding for the data center lease and related debt, although it would not include the cost of Nvidia’s AI processors.
OpenAI Looks to Build Its Own AI Infrastructure
If completed, the agreement would represent a major strategic shift for OpenAI.
Rather than relying heavily on cloud providers such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle, OpenAI aims to build and control more of its own AI infrastructure to support future generations of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence systems.

Reports also indicate that the project is connected to broader U.S.-Japan investment agreements involving energy infrastructure designed to support the enormous electricity requirements of advanced AI data centers.
