Ghana is mourning the loss of Sulemana Abdul Samed, widely known as the Ghana tallest man, whose remarkable height and warm personality made him a beloved figure across the country.
The 33-year-old passed away on Monday at Tamale Teaching Hospital after an infection developed in sores on his legs. His death has triggered an outpouring of grief, especially in northern Ghana, where he was admired for his generosity and humility.
A Kind Giant Remembered Across Ghana
Family members say Sulemana, affectionately called Awuche, was known not only for his extraordinary height but also for his caring nature.
Relatives described him as a generous man who always welcomed visitors with kindness. Since news of his passing spread, many people have continued visiting his family to pay their respects.
Residents say his popularity brought national recognition to his hometown of Gambaga.
Ghana Tallest Man Lived With Marfan Syndrome
Sulemana Abdul Samed was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, a rare genetic disorder affecting connective tissues.
When measured by the BBC in 2022, he stood approximately 7 feet 4 inches (223 centimeters) tall. Family members believe he had grown even taller before his death.
The condition caused severe health complications, including extremely long limbs and difficulty walking.
Health Challenges Changed His Life
Sulemana’s rapid growth began in his early twenties while working at a butcher shop in Ghana’s capital, Accra.
He initially noticed swelling of his tongue before the rest of his body started growing unusually fast.
His health forced him to abandon his dream of becoming a professional driver and eventually return to Gambaga, where he became a well-known local personality.
Although he struggled with mobility, he remained optimistic and continued inspiring those around him.
Support Arrived During His Final Months
Earlier this year, businessman Ibrahim Mahama, brother of Ghanaian President John Mahama, offered to cover Sulemana’s medical expenses.
Doctors had reported that he was responding well to treatment before his condition suddenly worsened.
Despite medical efforts, the infection proved fatal.
A Community Loses Its Gentle Giant
People across northern Ghana say Sulemana gave Gambaga a unique identity.
Whenever he traveled, he proudly introduced himself as being from Gambaga, helping put the small community on the national map.
His family has decided to bury him in Tamale rather than Gambaga to better accommodate the large number of mourners expected to attend.
