Europe Wants Strong Partnership With US in Moon Race, Says ESA Astronaut
Europe Moon race is entering a new chapter as the European Space Agency (ESA) strengthens its partnership with NASA. Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano says Europe is ready to play a major role in humanity’s return to the Moon through the Artemis III mission.
Europe Moon Race Strengthens International Cooperation
ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano believes Europe should remain a strong partner of the United States in the race to return humans to the Moon. He said both sides share the same goal of advancing space exploration for the benefit of humanity.
Parmitano explained that cooperation between Europe and the US remains strong despite political differences on Earth. According to him, astronauts stay focused on science, innovation, and exploration.
ESA Astronaut Prepares for Artemis III Mission
NASA selected Luca Parmitano to join the Artemis III mission, making him the first European astronaut to participate in the Artemis programme.
The mission is scheduled to launch in 2027. It will carry three NASA astronauts and Parmitano aboard the Orion spacecraft. Later, the crew will dock with lunar landers developed by SpaceX and Blue Origin before continuing the mission.
Parmitano described the opportunity as unexpected. However, he also called it one of the greatest honours of his career.
Artemis III Will Be One of NASA’s Most Complex Missions
The Artemis III mission involves several complicated stages. Multiple launches must happen within a short period. In addition, astronauts must complete difficult docking procedures in orbit before continuing toward the Moon.
Furthermore, the crew will spend long periods inside the Orion spacecraft, which offers limited living space. For this reason, NASA has created an intensive training programme.
The astronauts regularly perform simulations, emergency drills, and technical exercises. These activities prepare them for every possible situation during the mission.
Europe Continues Expanding Its Role in Space
Europe already plays an important role in the Artemis programme. ESA designed the European Service Module that powers the Orion spacecraft. The module also supplies electricity, oxygen, water, and thermal control throughout the mission.
Although NASA paused work on the Lunar Gateway project, ESA continues supporting future lunar exploration through advanced technology and engineering.

Parmitano believes ambitious goals are essential for successful space exploration. Therefore, he remains confident that international cooperation will help humanity return to the Moon.
