France and Spain are battling some of the worst wildfires in recent history. Firefighters are racing to control fast-moving flames before another intense heatwave hits southern Europe.
More than 300,000 people have evacuated across both countries. Officials describe it as one of Europe’s largest wildfire evacuations in decades. Authorities also warn that rising temperatures and dry winds could make conditions even worse over the coming days.
France Battles Major Bordeaux Wildfire
Firefighters in southwestern France have slowed a massive wildfire near Bordeaux. However, crews continue tackling several flare-ups.
The fire has burned nearly 42,000 hectares in six days. It has destroyed about 240 homes and forced more than 220,000 residents to leave their communities.
French President Emmanuel Macron said firefighters face difficult weeks ahead. He urged emergency services to stay ready as extreme weather continues.
Spain Enters Critical Stage
Firefighters in Spain continue fighting major wildfires west of Madrid. Authorities have already evacuated around 60,000 people.
Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said the next few hours will be critical because temperatures are rising again.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez urged everyone to remain extremely careful. He warned that Spain faces difficult and complex conditions as the weather worsens.
The fires have already destroyed about 77,000 hectares of land. That area is roughly the size of Hamburg, Germany.
Europe Prepares for Another Heatwave
Weather agencies expect another dangerous heatwave later this week.
Spain’s national weather service, AEMET, predicts temperatures of up to 42°C in northeastern areas. Central Spain could see highs of around 39°C.
Meanwhile, Météo-France expects temperatures close to 40°C. Hot, dry winds could quickly spread existing fires.
The Copernicus satellite system continues tracking wildfire activity. It provides real-time maps to help emergency teams respond faster.
EU Warns More Countries Face Fire Risk
EU Crisis Management Commissioner Hadja Lahbib warned that wildfire risks are spreading across Europe.
She said Portugal, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic could also face dangerous conditions.
The European Union has already deployed additional firefighting aircraft through its rescEU Civil Protection Mechanism.
Even so, officials believe they may need more resources if temperatures continue rising.
Authorities across Europe continue urging people to follow evacuation orders. They also advise residents to avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas and stay alert while firefighters work around the clock to control the blazes.
