The United Kingdom will not be intimidated by Iran’s recent threats, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has declared, insisting that Britain is fully prepared to defend itself and its allies against any potential aggression.
Speaking in an interview with the BBC, Streeting said the UK should not place too much importance on what he described as Iran’s “sabre-rattling” following recent warnings from Tehran, which labelled Britain a legitimate target because of its support for the United States and Israel during the conflict with Iran.
“We stand ready to respond to any attacks Iran wishes to wage against this country or our allies, and we will continue to do that,” Streeting said.
UK Rejects Joining Offensive Military Operations
The defence secretary reaffirmed that Britain has not participated in offensive military operations against Iran, despite allowing the United States to use British bases for defensive missions involving American personnel and aircraft.
Streeting stressed that the UK’s position remains unchanged.
“We have not joined and will not join offensive US military action in Iran,” he said.
However, he noted that Britain remains fully aligned with the United States when it comes to protecting international shipping and ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Focus on Maritime Security
Streeting revealed that he will meet US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth in the coming days to discuss closer defence cooperation between both countries.
He also confirmed that Britain is prepared to lead a naval mission aimed at clearing sea mines from the Strait of Hormuz once conditions become safe enough.
According to Streeting, securing the vital shipping route is essential because disruptions could push up global energy prices and increase the cost of living for households.
Russia Also Remains a Security Concern
The defence secretary also criticised Russia following a recent live-firing naval exercise in the English Channel.
He described the operation as “performative” and accused Moscow of behaving in an unsafe and unprofessional manner.
Streeting warned that Russia continues to pose a significant security challenge to the United Kingdom, adding that British defence forces work daily to counter Russian activities that often go unnoticed by the public.
UK Stands Firm
Despite heightened tensions in the Middle East and Europe, Streeting insisted Britain remains committed to protecting its national interests while supporting international security and maintaining stability in key global waterways.
He said the UK will continue working alongside its allies while making independent decisions regarding military involvement whenever necessary.
